End of Season Awards - 2015 / 16

At the end of the season all the club representatives come together for the League AGM.

Before the presenatation of the various League Awards, FA Representative Alec Berry presented our League President Alf Banner with the prestigious Football Association 50-Year Award.

Before handing over a framed letter, medal and lapel pin, Alec had this to say to the membership;

Alf started playing football in 1947 at the age of 14. He joined the Army where it is recoded that he played for the Royal Engineers in 1955. He also played for various Clubs who plied their trade in the Colchester & East Essex League as a player of King George V Football Club and for Colchester Deaf Football Club. Alf became Secretary of King George V FC during his time as well as a player a duel role.

As Secretary for Stockwell Arms Football Club, Alf took an active role with the Colchester & District Sunday League. Whilst also still being an active player in that team. There is evidence of Alf in a photograph on the Colchester & District Sunday League website showing him as a player in 1976 for Stockwell Arms Football Club, at an age of 43.

In 1988 Alf was involved with the Colchester & District Sunday League, and was approached by a neighbour of his, whose son was deaf. He was asked if there was any way that a group of deaf & some hearing lads. Who had been playing football together could start up a team, and enter the Colchester Sunday League. Alf discussed this with Charles Hewitt, who was the League President, which resulted in a team being entered into the League in Season 1988/1989. In 1998 he became manager of Colchester Deaf FC.

When they first started they were called Colchester Deaf, over the course of time they progressed & entered into County Cups, at which time Alf thinks they changed the name to Colchester United Deaf.

Alf became a member of the League Management Committee for the Colchester & District Sunday Football League between 1988 to 1994. He was then elected to the Leagues Executive Committee between 1994 and 1997. He then became the League's Vice Chairman in 1997 a position that he held for four years until 2001.

In 2001 Alf was elected Chairman of the Colchester & District Sunday League, a position he held with distinction until 2012. In 2012 Alf was elected into the prestigious position of the League's President, a position he still holds to date.

The Charlie Duthie Fair Play Awards are presented to the team in each Division who, as deemed by the League Management Committee have shown the best examples of fair play over the whole season - taking into account, amongst other things, their disciplinary record and referee reports.

Once again, the trophies were presented by Mr Graham Duthie.

The League was also very pleased to announce that Pathfields were to be awarded the Essex County Football Association Fair Play Award. There was no actual award to present on the night, as this would be coming to the club from ECFA at a later date, so, it was decided that as there was a spare cup 'lying around' we would celebrate their award with that !!

The Chairman's Harbour Award was presented to this year to Fox & Fiddler FC. Having had clubs do well in the Essex County FA Cup competitions over the last few years, but none quite managing to 'go all the way', Chairman Steve Catley felt that Fox & Fiddler deserved recognition for not only reaching a County Cup Final, but also winning it, beating Westcliff Utd 2-1 in the Essex Sunday Junior Trophy.
