6th September 2015 - Arthur Boswell Cup

FC Byair1 - 2Duckpond

Referee : Lucas Bomela
Assistants : Simon Lewis & Lee Miller

A bright, if breezy morning greeted the two sides at Lawford FC for the 2015/16 Arthur Boswell Cup.

Reigning league champions FC Byair got the game under way and were first on the attack but a good tackle from Eades put the ball out for a throw. A long ball in was cleared and Duckpond went forward. A pass over the top from Bradley eventually fell to Michael Hammond who took the chance to shoot from distance but the first effort on goal was an easy take for Saunders.

Byair were looking to take advantage of the pace of their two wingers and Hammarton got away up the right before flinging a great cross to the far post. Runicles got up to head back across but none of his teammates had taken a gamble and the brightly (and pinkly) clad Felgate was able to claim.

Another low cross from Hammarton was met by good defending, Duckpond moved it forward but the diagonal pass was just too long and Martin nodded back to his keeper. The ball came back into midfield, Boyce got possession and slid a pass up the line looking for Runicles but the flag was up - offside.

Timmins took the ball up the Duckpond right before laying it back to Mathurin. A deep pass to the edge of the Byair box was well cleared and suddenly Runicles was heading towards the Duckpond goal at pace. Good covering brought a defender across and he outmuscled Runicles with the Byair man going to ground as the ball ran through to the gloves of Felgate.

A high pass forward from Byair was well-controlled by Boyce on the run. He tried a pass back inside which was blocked back to him, a snapshot form distnace took a slight deflection but Felgate was well behind it and made the save.

At the other end Timmins had a half chance but was dispossessed as he tried to take aim. Byair worked the ball across the pitch from left to right, Kelliher put in a low cross, a Duckpond toe got their first - Byair corner. The ball came in high towards the far post, Martin got highest but couldn't get over it - goal kick.

The ball into midfield was picked up by Joseph, a hooked pass forward found the run of Hammarton who pushed it past his marker before shooting low but Felgate was quickly down to his right to make the save.

Timmins then had a shooting chance but could only send the ball high and wide.

Byair pushed forward, Eades made the interception and cleared into midfield where Garner took the chance to let fly first time on the volley, but again another shot flew way off the target. Liam Duly got possession in the centre of the park, created space and sent a pass beyond the Byair back line for the run of Timmins but the Duckpond man had strayed offside.

Liam Duly was back in possession soon after the restart and this time hit a pass up the line for Michael Hammond but Martin came over the top to win the header at the expense of a Duckpond throw. Duckpond worked the ball up the line towwards the Byair goal line before a rash challenge brought the Duck crashing to the ground and a free kick. Liam Duly took it hard and low across the six yard box, Saunders got a bit of it, Martin headed to the edge of the box where Eades met it with a firm header back towards goal but there wasn't enough on it to worry Saunders and he made an easy catch.

Runicles slipped a pass through for Runicles but Bradley got across to block and the resulting shot from distance was always going wide.

Byair played a long high pass down their right looking for the pace of Hammarton but Eades was taking no chances and headed out at the expense of a corner kick. Hammarton put it into the box, Martin got up and won the initial header, maybe a deflection to send it wide, Byair certainly thought so but a goal kick was the decision.

A poor header from Garner gave Michael Hammond a chance to cross but his effort lacked power and Byair were able to clear. Eades put it over the top for Michael Hammond to chase but another flag - another offside decision.

Michael Hammond was back in action from Duckpond's next attack, shielding the ball well up their right and winning a throw. Liam Duly received the ball in, a Byair toe nicked it away but Duckpond had a corner. Marangou got up highest to clear, Garner moved it on and Byair had a throw at halfway. Nothing came of it and Duckpond spread play out to their right. Bradley banged it crossfield to the edge of the Byair box, a misjudgement by the defender and Ash Wood was in. Taking his time, he waited for the ball to drop before hitting an unstoppable drive past Saunders to find the back of the Byair net and put Duckpond into the lead.

FC Byair 0 - 1 Duckpond.

A cross from Runicles broke to Joseph, a definite chance, but his shot was straight at a very grateful Felgate. Duckpond thenm got a free kick, Michael Hammond flicked on and a Byair foot put it behind for a corner. Liam Duly cut it back to Eades on the edge of the box but he took just too long to get his shot away and the chance was blocked.

Byair went forward, a pass sent Runicles away, with defenders chasing he tried to take his shot early but his toe poke was wide of the near upright.

Byair then found themselves with another shooting chance, sloppy defending conceded cheap possession to Manning but his left foot shot flew wide.

Byair were soon back in possession inside their own half, but good pressure from Duckpond had them going backwards and Saunders was forced into a hurried kick clear that evaded the best efforts of his teammate and Duckpond had a throw. Byair cleared thje danger but Mathurin picked it up and set off on another positive charge forward. He got to the edge of the Byair box but dallied when the chance to shoot presented itself and Byair were able to clear.

A foul as Duckpond tried to go forward gave them a free kick, the ball into the Byair box was well dealt with by Martin and Byair went forward themselves. A pass from Joseph picked out Hammarton who did excellently to keep the ball from going out for a goal kick and managed to win his side a corner. The cross into the Duckpond box was cleared, Boyce took the chance to volley but again another shot was off target.

Half Time: FC Byair 0 - 1 Duckpond

The first chance of the second half fell to Byair and it was all Runicles's own work as he picked the ball up outside the Duckpond box and moved right looking for space. Eventually a shooting chance came his way but he was denied by a good low save from Felgate.

Duckpond went forward, a long pass looked easy for Saunders but the Byair keeper seemed reluctant to pick it up and he was almost caught out by the hassling Michael Hammond.

A foul on halfway brought the first yellow card of the match with Kelliher the recipient. The ball in was right to the edge of the six yard box and it was Martin up again to get his head to the ball and send it over his own bar. A poor cross from the corner came to nothing but Wood got in ahead of Hammarton as Byair tried to go forward, Liam Duly worked it to Cuthbertson but his cross was too near the keeper.

Runicles was in on the keeper but again good pressure from the covering defender did just enough to put the Byair striker off and Felgate made the save.

Good play up the Duckpond left between Cuthbertson, Wood & Michael Hammond gave Wood the chance to cross but there was too much on it and Saunders made the catch.

A tackle from Martin saw him go straight through Michael Hammond who hit the ground in a heap but despite calls for a card, a free kick was the only decision. Liam Duly lined up the shot but his right footed effort cleared both the defensive wall and the Byair crossbar.

FC Byair substitutions: West & Johnson on for Kelliher & Garner.

A bit of a reshuffle for Byair as they looked to get back into this match but it was Duckpond who nearly doubled their lead. A curled pass goalwards looked an easy claim for Saunders but Mathurin was coming at pace from the far side and very nearly got on the end of it as Saunders snatched the ball at the last second.

Hammarton got away up the right for Byair, his deep cross found Saunders8 beyond the far post who cracked a powerful shot goalwards but alas for Byair it was another chance gone wide. A foul by Byair's Hammarton gave Duckpond a free kick but too much on it for the players waiting in the box and Byair had a goal kick.

Saunders8 picked out Hammarton on the right, his deep cross was dangerous and the nearest Duckpond defender was taking no chances, touching it behind for a Byair corner.

Taylor rose highest to clear the corner, Byair came forward again, Runicles took the shot but high over the bar.

A high cross into the Byair box had Saunders flapping but from the resulting corner the Byair keeper was quickly up to touch Ben Hammond's firm header over to safety. Eades met the next cross in but his effort flew well wide.

A strong run from Manning carried the ball deep into Duckpond territory, Marangou clipped the ball over the top and no chances taken at the back - corner kick. The cross was cleared for a Byair throw - deep into the box but a high foot and a Duckpond free kick.

And then, almost from nothing Byair were level. A long ball found Runicles inside the Duckpond box, the ball broke from the tackle to the feet of Jason Joseph and he made no mistake, firing low past the despairing dive of Felgate to find the net off the inside of the post.

FC Byair 1 - 1 Duckpond.

Positive words now from Byair, they were back in it. Good play between Cuthbertson and Wood down the left looked promising for Duckpond but the final ball was poor and Byair were able to clear. And then, from the same area of nowhere that Byair's equaliser came, Duckpond found themselves back in front. A hopeful punt into the Byair box had players fighting for it, the ball fell kindly for Michael Hammond and he forced it past Saunders before heading off to the corner flag to start wild celebrations.

FC Byair 1 - 2 Duckpond.

Duckpond substitution : John Duly on for Michael Hammond.

Boyce took the ball up the Byair left, his low cross was cleared but only to Juby who put it back into Joseph but Eades stood firm and made the challenge. Byair came again, a cross picked out Saunders8 who drove the ball goalwards but Goldsmith got his head in the way to send the ball behind for a corner. The kick was taken short before a cross to the far post but it eluded everyone and Duckpond shepherded it out for throw.

Byair picked up possession again but Hammarton's cross in was too near Felgate and he made the catch.

With very little time left Byair pushed hard but Duckpond did well to run out the clock and Mr Bomela's final blast of the whistle was greeted by cheers of Duckpond players and supporters.
