Colchester Gaslights have emerged as the only side now likely to have any chance of overhauling Colchester Sunday League division one table toppers Dog and Pheasant.

Beating Royal London 2-1 at Bromley Road, enabled Gaslights to move within six points of Dog and P and they have still three matches in hand. Scott and Duffett scored the goals.

Second division outfit Monkwick did the Colchester Sunday League proud by winning their seventh round Essex Junior Trophy tie at PC Services 3-1 with goals from Callaway (2) and Jeal.

Dog and Pheasant are even hotter favourites for the division one championship - even though they were not in action at the end.

Tey Lion are now out of the hunt after a 1-0 defeat at Mersea where Stuart Hempstead was on target and Gaslights could do no better than manage a goalless draw with Wormingford. They are five points behind the Dog with two games in hand.

Colne Hammers are favourites in division five. They slammed Colchester Hospital 7-0 with Lowes (2), Welsh (2), Beeby, Stoney and Prior on target and are now only one points behind Hospital Rangers with three games in hand. Hospital were pipped 4-3 by Cambridge Arms.

Dynapert Precima carried off the Colchester Sunday League's Ernie Osborne Cup when beating Drury Arms Res 2-1 with goals from Emsden and Turnbull. Gill replied.

Gaslights, who beat Essex Junior Trophy specialists Monkwick 3-0, Q's, Donkey and Buskin and Robert's Bar made League Cup progress.

Scott (2) and Woodall were the men who brought Monkwick down to earth, but the latter have plenty to occupy themselves with for the rest of the season. In addition to the county trophy they are gunning for promotion from the second division.

Q's overcame the fifth division giant killers Flag by the odd goal in three with Diss and Jones netting. Sheppard replied.

Donkey and Buskin, who have taken the third division by storm and still have a 100-per-cent record, brought down top section Gunners with Sadler and an own goal seeing them through.

Robert's Bar saw off Rowhedge Athletic 3-1 at Clairmont Road and their hero was Gray who finished the game as a hat-trick man.

Mistley maintained their second division promotion hopes when pipping Drury Arms in a 5-4 thriller and Watson was the start here with a hat-trick. Barnes and Taylor made up the winning total and Clark (2), Jackson and Gotch replied.

Gaslights warmed up for their John Fowler Cup final clash against second division Pegasus at Bromley Road this weekend by hammering Mersea United 8-1 to keep their Colchester Sunday League top section championship hopes alive.

Ricketts led the way with a hat-trick, Harvey and Scott each contributed a brace and Bethell was also on target. Hempstead otained Mersea's consolation.

And just as big a boost for Gas was the news of Dog and Pheasant's 2-1 downfall at the hands of Royal London who edged home with goals by McGregor and Innes. Barton replied.

Gunners were firing on all cylinders at Dedham where they blitzed the home side 8-2 through Crick (2), Baker (2), Harvey (2), Craig and Caley. Easey and Wheatcroft were the home side's marksmen.

The big second division match at Clairmont Road, Colchester, ended with honours even as Monkwick (Chatter and Walkinshaw) shared four goals with Mistley (Smith 2).

These two look the best bets for promotion, especially as Drury fell 3-1 to Tiptree Monarchs for whom Friend was a real pal by grabbing all three.

As expected Gaslights carried off Colchester Sunday League's John Fowler Cup at Bromley Road, but the first division title favourites were given a good run for their money by second division AFC Pegasus before coming out on top 4-2.

This was the 12th Fowler final and Gaslights carried off the trophy for the third time against opponents making their first appearance in the decider.

Sean Duffett (2), Tommy Scott and Kevin Harvey were on target for the winners with Tim Topper and Jon Daughters replying. Daughters thus finishes with 11 goals in the competition this season.

Shirley Fowler, the widow of the popular Colchester United left back John Fowler, presented the trophy to Gaslights skipper Mick Potter.

Gaslights continue on the trophy trail this weekend when they face Donkey and Buskin in the semi final of the League Cup. The other semi-final features Q's and Robert's Bar and both matches will be staged at Clairmont Road.

And at Boxted there will be the final of the Terry Martin Trophy between Drury Arms Reserves and Tey Lion Reserves.

Monkwick's bid for glory in the Essex Junior Trophy came to an end at the semi-final stage in heart-breaking style when after finishing level on 1-1 after extra time with opponents Lindsey Street they were beaten on penalties.

Gaslights' division one title rivals Dog and Pheasant returned to winning form when a single goal was sufficient to see them home against Mersea United Glen Matthews obliged.

Tey Lion who were in the running at one time fought out a 1-1 draw against Dedham whose marksman was Clark. Cross replied.

The day's top individual marksman was Palmer of Aldham who hammered luckless Manningtree Rovers 7-0 down in division six.

None of the losing sides managed a goal in this section.
