Colchester Gaslights' treble hopes in the Colchester Sunday League took a surprising knock when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Royal London.

So Gas, already holders of the John Fowler Cup, and safely through to the League Cup Final, now need a maximum four points from their last two matches if they are to lift the first division championship.

Dog and Pheasant have finished their programme and Gaslights need to beat Wormingford and Gunners to pip them on the post.

Thompson was the Gaslights' marksman at the weekend and the Royal London point saver was netted by Snowdon.

Dedham Sports and Mersea United also figured in a top-section tight battle with the former coming out on top by the odd goal in five with Fowler, Allen and Nuttall on target. King hit a brace for Mersea.

The day's top individual marksman was Welsh of the Flag who hit four in his side's 10-1 fifth division romp against Mersea United Reserves. This was also the top team total of the day.

In division two Monkwick, so long favourtites for the title, went down 2-0 at Old Heath to AFC Pegasus for whom Daughters and Topper netted. Reeks was a hat-trick man as St Martin's overcame Grapes (Robson 2, Doherty) 5-3 and Lee contributed the other two for the winners.

Hume (2) and Day saw Wells Hall to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Boxted. Donkey and Buskin, who were not in action at the weekend, need only need two points from their last five matches to sew up the third division championship.

Tiptree Monarchs continued their winning run when edging home 2-1 against Birch Park Royals (McDermott) with both goals coming from Lee.

Tobin hit a fifth division treble for Dynapert who defeated Nayland Eagles 5-2.

Unusually, there was only one hat-trick in division six and that came from Andrews of Hospital Rangers whop hit Robert's Bar Reserves for six of best without reply.

Colchester Gaslights completed the second leg in the their bid for a Colchester Sunday League treble when beating Q's 2-1 in the final of the League Cup at Bromley Road.

The fourth division outfit put up gallant resistance against the first division giants who had previously lifted the Fowler Cup and now need a maximum four points from their last two matches to carry off the league title.
Woodall and Tanner got the Gas goals and J.Jones replied.

Monkwick boosted their second division promotion hopes with a 3-2 success against Drury who have fallen by the wayside after a promising start to the season. Hamilton's hat-trick swung matters with Gotch and an own goal replying.
